Cloths of Heaven - William Butler Yeats

Had I the heavens' embroidered cloths,

Enwrought with golden and silver light,

금빛, 은빛 무늬 섞어 짠

하늘의 천이 내게 있다면

 

The blue and the dim and the dark cloths

Of night and light and the half-light,

밤과 낮을 어스름으로 수놓을

파랗고 희뿌였고 검은 천이 내게 있다면

 

I would spread the cloths under your feet:

But I, being poor, have only my dreams;

그대 발 밑에 그 천을 깔아드리련만

나 가난하여 오직 꿈 만을 가졌기에

 

I have spread my dreams under your feet;

Thread softly because you tread on my dreams.

그대 발 밑에 내 꿈을 깔았으니

사뿐히 밟으소서 그대 밟는 것 내 꿈이오니

Metaphorical expression - light

 

1. Shed light on - help us understand better / (발견, 연구, 사실 등을) 밝히다, 조명하다

ex) Scientists hope the discovery of this gene will shed light on the hereditary nature of the disease.

 

2. Enlightment - understanding / 깨우침, 이해, 계몽

ex) She travelled to India in search of enlightenment.

 

3. Give the green light - approve / 허락하다, 승인하다

ex) The government has given the green light to the proposal.

 

4. In the light of - considering / ~에 비추어, 고려하여

ex) In the light of the latest revelations, the government has decided not to renew their contract.

 

5. The light at the end of the tunnel - signs that a situation is going to improve / 터널 끝의 빛 > 고생 끝에 낙이 온다 라는 우리나라 속담과 결이 같음

ex) The project has already taken six months, but I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.

 

6. Come to light - emerge, appear / (사람들에게) 알려지다, 밝혀지다

ex) New facts have come to light which suggest that our earlier hypothesis was wrong.

ex) We had a very illuminating discussion, but in the cold light of the day I reject his argument.

 

8. In an altogether different light - In a new way / 완전히 다른 시각으로 보면

ex) I thought he was an honest person, but I'm afraid his behaviour has led me to see him in an altogether different light.
