Hoax - fake

ex) People who produce hoax photos do it because they feel excited when the hoax succeeds.

Take up / (특히 이미 끝난 데서 시작하여) 계속하다

ex1) I've recently started taken up doing yoga. / 난 최근에 요가를 (다시) 시작했다.

ex2) The band's new album takes up where their last one left off. / 밴드의 새 앨범은 지난번 끝난 데에서 시작한다.

 

Settle down / (조용히 한 곳에 자리 잡고) 정착하다

ex1) I don't think he'll ever settle down.

ex2) When are you going to get married and settle down?

 

Set up / 셋업하다, 건립 설립하다, 준비하다, 함정에 빠트리다 다양한 뜻이 있음

ex) She set up the company with her brother in 2001.

 

Turn up / 나타나다, 도착하다 등

ex) They turned up two hours late.

 

Run out of / 다 써버리다

ex) He went travelling but ran out of all his money and had to come home early.

 

Take to - 누군가를 금방 좋아하게 되거나 새로운 습관을 가질 때 사용하는 표현

ex1) I took to John the moment I met him.

ex2) The first series was really bad. But for some reason the public took to it.

 

Step down / 사직, 퇴직하다

ex) After the scandal, the President step down.

 

Get over / 넘다, 건너다, 극복하다

ex) I'll never get over from the death of my parrot.

 

Go by / (시간 등이) 지나가다, 흐르다

ex) Many years went by before he fogave his brother.

 

I wish, If only + past simple for things you want to change but it is impossible or not likely. / 바꾸고 싶지만 바꿀 수 없거나 그렇지 않을 만한 것

ex1) I wish I had more time.(But I don't have more time.)

ex2) I wish you were here.(But you aren't here.)

 

I wish, If only + could to talk about possibilities and abilities you want to change. / 너가 바꾸고 싶은 능력이나 가능성에 대해 이야기 할 때, 얼핏 보면 위의 과거 시제를 사용했을 때랑 의미 전달은 비슷할 수 있으나 could 가 들어간 뉘앙스, 즉 가능성의 느낌이 조금 더 있다.

ex) I wish I could swim.(But I can't) - 내가 수영을 할 수 있으면 좋을텐데...

 

I wish, If only + person/thing + would to talk about things you want to change because they annoy you. / 누군가 혹은 무엇인가가 바뀌길 당신이 바랄 때 왜냐면 그게 당신을 짜증나게 하기 때문에

ex1) I wish you'd listen to me! - 너가 내 이야기를 좀 들었으면 좋겠다.(왜냐면 너가 내 이야기를 안듣기 때문에)

ex2) I wish Pat wouldn't text all the time. - Pat이 하루종일 문자메세지 하지 않았으면 좋겠다.(왜냐면 Pat은 하루종일 문자메세지를 해서 신경쓰이거든.)

 

I wish, If only + past perfect to talk about things which happened or didn't happen in the past and which you regret now. / 과거에 일어났거나 혹은 일어나지 않은 일에 대해 지금 당신이 후회하고 있을 때

ex1) I wish I'd stayed at home. - 집에 머물렀다면 (지금 생각하기에) 좋았을텐데 / 어딘가를 나가서 지금 후회함

ex2) They wish they hadn't come. - 그들이 오지않았다면 좋았을텐데 / 그들이 와서 후회함
